REVIEW: The Pole Shebang

Age Suitability: Parental Guidance (ages 13+)

Genre: Dance, Circus, Storytelling/Solo Show

Run Time: 55 mins

Venue: Theatre Aquarius Studio

Andrea James Lui is here to show you, quite literally, that the best way to understand pole dancing is to experience it. After an impressive opening number showcasing her incredible energy and breath-taking athleticism, Lui takes the audience on an eye-opening journey, complete with unexpected audience participation, which wowed the Saturday afternoon crowd.

There is a story here too with Lui preparing for the Miss Pole Dancing World competition and as she teaches terms and moves through mini montages, the audience also learns about her family, her vulnerabilities and how she has carved out an identity for herself all while wearing 7-inch heels. Throughout this, Lui is funny, self-aware and good spirited with a confidence many of us could only wish for.

While this review may feel short, it is only because this Fringe show demands to be seen and not spoiled. Just know the final number is flashy and pure nerd culture joy. Definitely do not miss this spectacular addition to this year’s Fringe.
